We'll Always Have Paris

Despite being dumped by the White House, the romantic notion of Paris lives on in a number of organizations professing their unwavering commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. The September issue of AP highlights The International Living Future Institute's (ILFI) Paris Solutions Campaign as one of several leading the charge. During this month's Global Climate Action Summit, United Airlines promised to cut carbon emissions in half with its plan to transition to biofuels in the air and solar energy on the ground; and there too, surfaced the "We Are Still In" movement—a coalition of 3,500 states, cities, companies and organizations galvanized by a commitment to maintain climate goals set forth by the Obama administration. A&D industry members of the Paris Solutions Campaign promise to hold each other to milestones on the collective path to net-zero, while individual members share turn-by-turn directions as they depart from the carbon economy. As the permafrost releases volumes of carbon and methane at an alarming rate and global communities brace for routine catastrophic weather events, it is my hope that these committed climate activists can halt climate change. To join the Paris Solutions Campaign, contact LIFI's Zero Energy Director, and read on for some more items from the September issue that help put vision into action.

New & Noteworthy

Coalesse's cooperative design effort with Designtex incorporates Biophilia; the companies combined forces to create its interpretations of sacred geometry they call Coalesse Pattern. These biophilic patterns feature elements that mimic the affects of a brain immersed in nature, which also promotes happiness and engagement in the workplace. Images such as a reflection of water, dappled light, wood, sand and flocking birds, were digitally manipulated through a meticulous design process of iteration and reduction to distil them into simple, pure, repeatable motifs. The Coalesse patterns represent some of the most pleasing patterns in nature, and can be embedded into almost any textile, tabletop or LessThanFive chair. Patterns such as stardust, gas clouds, and hydraulic circulation, and 'chaos and flow,' bring a dynamic aesthetic journey to a surface. This year at NeoCon, the buffet of Biophilic patterns is more easily applied to furniture and fabrics with the new online visualizer tool that allows designers to scale each pattern between 50% - 200% for micro and macro effects, select a foreground and background color for glass top tables, or select different scales/colors for individual components—seat, inner back, outer back, legs—of Coalesse's LessThanFive Chair.

LEDs Take the Nightshift

Anyone with an iPhone is familiar with the nightshift setting and now Lighting Science offers that technology in its LED downlights. Based on technology developed in collaboration with NASA to support the natural circadian rhythms of astronauts living on board on the International Space Station, the Good Day&Night solution emits a full blue light spectrum to replicate sunlight, and after sunset, shifts to a sleep setting. The luminaire is controlled via a standard wall switch, or by a wireless switch accessory. The new LED downlight provides alertness in the office, home or gym, while the night setting enhances melatonin production and promises more restorative sleep for bedrooms, hotels or hospital rooms. The new lights are installed in the amenity and public spaces at Grammercy Square in New York City as part of the wellness package offering.

Biophilia Bash

Naava has the potential to revolutionize the way we perceive indoor environmental quality. In addition to a standard green wall, Naava green walls feature a system of active biofilters, which magnify the air purification power of plants and create fresh, natural air indoors, while also enhancing interior biophilia. The award-winning Finnish furniture innovation combines the benefits of nature, future technology and Scandinavian design to provide healthier, happier and more inspiring indoor spaces.

A study commissioned by US wellness real estate company Delos, independent UK-based research institute BRE and University of Technology Sydney (UTS) shows that Naava green walls purify indoor air. In addition, Finnish universities and research institutes have researched Naava's air purification capacity. Nava is the "forest in a furniture" innovation, an intelligent and automated Naava active green wall. The key is the active flow of air through the Naava biofilters, making the high-performance system superior to houseplants in regular soil pots.
