Flooring Provides Stylish Pathway to Sustainability

The design for these floors needed to convey a high-end professional feel while maintaining the benefits which had been achieved using an access floor system. The architectural firm of Mark Cavagnero Assocs. had a clear vision of materials: teak plank wood, multi-piece porcelain and carpet. The challenge became how to blend these varying materials as transitions and maintain the functionality of the access floor system. At 30-stories and 450,000 sq. ft., 350 Mission Street is the first LEED Platinum high-rise in the city. Designed with a sharp focus on sustainability—not the least being more efficient HVAC delivery—a goal that fit in well with the desire of the developer, Kilroy Realty Corp.

The “Unfinished Theatre” is the name that the inhabitants of Lublin nicknamed the old building that has occupied the city center for more than 40 years. With construction starting in 1960, it was set to be Europe’s largest opera palace. Funding problems at the start, together with the economic crisis of the 1980s and political changes at the end, left the unfinished building as a metaphor for a society that went down in history. Flooring Revitalizes School Fitness Center

According to Dana Ridenour, director of Advancement at Calvary Christian Academy (CCA), a pre-K3-12 school located in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., “Everything starts with the flooring. Then you can start building and painting, but you have got to have a great floor first.” The surface of the entire fitness center, which is housed inside a former warehouse adjacent to the campus, was concrete. Four surfaces provide safety, ergonomic and acoustic properties for the 3774-sq.-ft. space, which is used by more than 200 students and student athletes daily.

Non-Profit Facility Designs to Durability and Style

Westminster Neighborhood Services is a non-profit organization on the east side of Indianapolis that works with community partners to provide food and clothing to neighborhood families as well as children’s programs that meet nurturing, safety, educational and developmental needs. The 16,620-sq.-ft. facility, which also serves as a neighborhood adult soup kitchen, contains a computer lab, adult classroom, learning center, a store for basic needs and a dining hall.During the design phase of the facility, one of the main goals was to construct a building that would hold up over time and serve the community far into the future.

Credit Union Banks on Precision Illumination

While the architect had the best of intentions, the lighting of the credit unions’ lobby became an issue as unforeseen circumstances came to fruition. One of those issues had to do with the physical position of the building itself. Facing north, the large windows offered plenty of daylight on sunny days, which is always welcome in a commercial space. This caused a tremendous amount of glare, however, during prime working hours that made it difficult for staff members to do their jobs. Monument Showcases High Heritage

Built on the last available spot on the National Mall in Washington D.C., the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) included many partners that worked collaboratively during the design and construction phases.
